Digital versions

I woke up at about 3 am this morning with what I’ll call a premonition wave of the energy of the upcoming election. It was not predictive, but it was valent in its intensity. It reminded me of swimming out into a big swell. Preparation for the wave of intensity that is coming.

This has combined with some digital activism in which we are engaged, and an interesting article I read yesterday in The New York Times about a confrontation between Robert Smith, the now-65-year-old enigmatic frontman of The Cure versus Live Nation and Ticketmaster (who have colluded to raise concert ticket prices) around their recent and upcoming tour. Smith, who has loyal fans from nearly 50 years of music-making (!), wanted concert tickets to start at $20. Live Nation usually begins pricing them at about $130. When Smith held his ground, Live Nation started adding a monstrous surcharge to these low-priced tickets: a charge more than the price of the tickets themselves. Smith threatened to cancel the tour, Live Nation and Ticketmaster relented. Smith was somewhat astonished by how few artists got behind him in challenging this imperial force. He was like, We’re the artists. The fans are coming to see us. We are the ones with the leverage. Anyhow…

Since many of you are obviously interested in this work, and possibly not yet prepared to shell out $59 for the hardcover (that price is a result of the ludicrous cost of full color hardcover printing, which we are doing on-demand right now) despite its magnetic and magisterial beauty, all 552 pages of it in color, and the perplexing fact that the dust jacket becomes a poster, we have decided to vivisect the manuscript into its three movements, and share these digitally at a more modest price point.
